Career Exploration Program

Our Career Exploration program aims to provide students an in-person exploration of a career in governmental environmental public health.

The program:

  • Is a 200-hour paid opportunity, 5–8-weeks (choose full or part-time) with host site
  • Provides shadowing, field experience, and the opportunity to assist with projects
  • Matches students with state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) environmental public health agencies

Student Benefits

  • Base stipend of $6,000
  • Need-based relocation financial assistance, if needed
  • Registration and travel scholarship to attend our Annual Education Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, July 15-18, 2024

Student Eligibility

To be considered as a participant for this program, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Attend a college level environmental health or public health academic program
  • Be willing to submit a current resume and unofficial transcript
  • If selected, be willing to commit 200-hours to working with the host site you are matched with

We have a limited number of spots available for the summer 2024 pilot program, and we are prioritizing applications from students attending universities or colleges in U.S. Territories and minority-serving institutions.

Student Application

To be considered for placement in the Career Exploration Program, students must provide:

  • A that includes:
    • An up-to-date resume
    • An unofficial transcript
  • Applications are due by July 8, 2024

Host Site Details

Host sites help students learn about the roles and responsibilities of the environmental public health workforce. As part of the program, host sites:

  • Provide 200 hours of job shadowing, field experience, and mentorship in environmental public health
  • Provide the student with a thorough introduction to the organization and assist them in following all policies and procedures
  • Oversee completion of experience hours
  • Complete an

Host Site Benefits

By participating in our Career Exploration Program, host sites:

  • Help to build the next generation of qualified applicants for state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) environmental public health roles
  • Receive a support package of up to $1,500 per student for supplies or materials related to the experience
